Achieving Goals

Are you having trouble sticking with your goals?

Read on

When people have goals or New Year’s resolutions they are excited because they imagine being richer, sexier, healthier, and so on.

Let’s face it. Having dreams is exciting. However, whenever people start going after their dreams it becomes well… work. Even the most exciting of endeavors become work at some point. Becoming healthier requires hours at the gym. Becoming rich takes decades of work. Having a great marriage and amazing children is a lifetime commitment.

Greatness is not being amazing for one time or two times. It’s being amazing the rest of your life.

After you set your goals, you must get to work.

There are a multitude of issues that you have to consider when you are actually working on your goals. As my buddy, Roberto Candelaria says you have to be a dreamer and a doer.

Are you ready?

Are you really ready?

Let’s get to work.

1. Properly define a goal. One of the problems is that people don’t know how to define a goal. They say I want to be rich. Or, I want to meet the love of my life. Or, maybe I want to be healthier. Those statements can have a spectrum of meanings. For example, $10, 000 might be a lot of money one person, but to a billionaire it might not mean the same thing. So, when you define your goal you must be specific. Another issue is that when you define a goal make sure that you are thinking about every aspect of the goal. When people say that they want to write a book what they really mean is they want to write the book, get the book published, market the book, sell the book, and monetize the backend of the book. When people say that they want to lose weight what they should mean is they want to develop a workout routine and eat healthy food. When you specify your goals, they become more tangible.

2. Go from dream oriented to process oriented. The way I used to operate was I would get excited about a conference or a new online class, or something that I saw on YouTube, or I would insist on having a meeting with team members. Then, I would talk about what I wanted to do in the future. In reality, I was just focusing on the dream. I was dream oriented. And, it got me nowhere. So, I made a shift. I stopped solely focusing on the dream and started focusing on the process. Dreaming is a big part of success, but to make that dream a reality, you must have a process. I learned this from James Clear in an article. The process does not care how motivated you are. It does not care how tired you are. It doesn’t care about anything except producing results.

3. Emotional ebb and flow. Achieving goals is a highly emotional endeavor. Achieving your goals and amazing success requires that you to be emotionally consistent. There will be excitement, disappointment, boredom, disagreements, frustrations, fear, and a whole slew of other emotions. It is imperative for you to manage your emotions. This means not getting too excited when you start getting results. It also means not acting like it’s the worst thing in the world when something goes awry. This is another reason why the process is so important to your success. All the process cares about is producing the results. This does not mean that you can’t feel fear, excitement and other emotions. It means that you should simply feel the emotions then move on.

4. Routine and habits. One of the first steps after you define your goal is to look at the routines you need to change and the habits you need to work on. Your goals need time, money, energy, and your attention. No matter how many resources you have, you need to allocate or reallocate these resources to your goals. Some habits are ingrained in us from a young age, and if we are not fully conscious of our actions it is easy to fall back into the same bad habits.

5. Keep it ordinary. Extraordinary results start with ordinary steps. Use tools such as a calendar and reminders to keep on track. Every day when I wake up before work, I make a to-do list. This list keeps my company on track. Also, I have a sign in my office that says the calendar is king. Note – if you say the calendar is king, let it be king. You cannot put something on the calendar and later when a friend calls you to have a beer, you abandon the calendar to have a beer. Every endeavor has its own version of ordinary. A great marriage is built on ordinary communication at the kitchen table. An athlete always needs to stretch before games. A great parent is not one who swoops in at the holidays and brings big gifts. A great parent is there when their kids are having a good day, a bad day, or even when they hate you. Remember, when performed on a consistent basis, small ordinary steps yield extraordinary results.

6. Avoid distractions. There will be distractions, and in order to become successful you have to learn how to avoid distractions. One distraction leads to another and you cannot react to everything. You are not responsible for a breakdown of your best friend. Turn off alerts on your phone. Don’t follow the YouTube or the google rabbit hole. Stay focused. In the book The Charge, by Brendon Burchard. Burchard talks about the need for consciousness. He writes that every so often we have to stop and ask ourselves one simple question, “Am I focused on the right thing?” He even has alerts scheduled on his phone to ask that simple question. Everything important requires its own time and presence.

7. Consistency. In order to create momentum, your goals need resources on a consistent basis. Your time, your energy, your money, your focus, and your other resources are the logs that fuel a fire. If you don’t keep putting on logs, even the biggest of fires will die out. Your goals are hungry for your resources. And, you must consistently give your goals the resources they need to thrive.

8. Commitment. These are not just ideas. These are tactics. This is how stuff gets done. People reading this can have reactions throughout the spectrum. On one end, one could say, “it’s a good idea, and I know that I should be doing this.” However, on the other end, is the person that says, “great idea.” I am willing to make a true commitment to produce the results that will get me on the path to an amazing life. I have been reading and studying these concepts for decades. However, one day I said I am going to make a commitment to my dreams. Lastly, it’s important not to overcommit. When we set goals, we are excited to lose weight, open a company, and to top it off, write the next great American novel. When we see minimal or no results we become discouraged and go back to our lives. Try this instead. Commit to one or two activities at a time. Weave it into your habits and routines. Get some results. Then, repeat. There are times, right now, in my business when I receive an email or watch a YouTube video and I have to say to myself, “not now.” This is not because it’s not valuable information. It’s because I don’t have enough resources at that time to fully immerse myself into what is being taught. On the same note, we have to decommit to some of the activities that take up our time. When you are achieving your goals, your commitment is not to your friend who had a bad day or a hangnail. What habits can you give up in order to achieve your goals?

These are the eight truths that you need to reach amazing success. You have to be willing to do the activities that most people are not willing to do. Properly define your goal, become process oriented, be careful of your routines and habits, keep it ordinary, avoid distractions, and be committed in order to reach your amazing.
