The Process

I read about ten self-help articles every week.

Last week, I read an article by James Clear. He presented an idea that really hit home in my mind.  He said instead of focusing on achieving your goals, focus on building a process. That was very insightful to me because long-term goals can be very far away. He gave an example of a coach who has a goal of winning a championship. Instead of focusing on said goal, he focused on the process of what he needs to do every day in order to achieve his goal.  Even though he now focuses on the process, he’s more likely to win that championship. I love to speak.  I love to publish books.  I love to write.  There are a lot of activities that I need to perform in order for me to achieve my goals.  Some of them I like and some of them I dislike…and there are some parts of my job that are boring, like ordering postcards and other office supplies.

One of the mistakes that I made early in my career was only focusing on the tasks that I loved.  I spent time networking with people instead of focusing on a plan to actually get me booked, and I spent hours talking about how cool it would be to be on TV.

What I have learned from writing my latest book Big Dreams Take Small Sacrifices is in order to achieve a goal, it’s all about putting together a regimen.  You must stick to that regimen when you are happy, sad, or even a little hung over.  My process right now involves four activities:

1.)  Communicating to my team what I need and expect, and provide them all the tools they require.

2.)  Making sure that I am learning as a person. (I don’t want to be a hypocrite, because there are no hypocrites in the self-help industry, are there?)

3.)  Managing my brand and marketing messaging.

4.)  Making sure I write on a consistent basis.

There are ordinary steps one takes to achieve extraordinary goals. Focusing on the process rather than extraordinary outcomes will help you achieve greater success.
