Why You Need 3 Good Days to Cancel Out 1 Bad One Science Backed

Nobody said life was perfect. Part of dealing with challenges is managing negative emotions. Your success relies on how well you can deal with negative emotions and put them into perspective. It is not wise to ignore them because they are trying to tell you something important.

Regarding my disability, I often find myself fighting negative emotions. It's challenging to see people effortlessly perform activities that my disability makes more challenging or impossible. About two or three times a week, my disability puts me in a real pickle—waiting for someone to help or for a kind stranger to pick up something I dropped.

Sometimes the emotional ramifications are more challenging than the physical challenges. Yet, I feel that I am one of the most positive and joyful people, and that's not by accident. It takes work. It's an intentional practice.

According to researchers, human beings need three positive experiences to counterbalance one negative one. Unfortunately, the brain has a challenging time distinguishing between a tiger roaring and a text taken the wrong way. Have you had a good day, but one two-minute conversation ruined it? We have all been there.

Some people never get over a bad breakup, are haunted by past trauma, or never get over a bad professional experience. If you are human, something bad has happened or will happen. There is no success without challenges. Your job is to put negative emotions into place so you can move forward and not let them hijack your success.

Many emotions are caused by chemicals released in the brain. These reactions only last a few moments, and it's up to you to get back to your normal. Unfortunately, many people's normal is actively seeking the next problem.

Understanding and Managing Stress

Not all stress is bad. The right stress can create diamonds. Part of success is taking on bigger challenges, and with challenges come negative emotions. Many stresses in your life are because you don't have optimal decision-making. If you're struggling to make ends meet yet buy a house or car above your budget, you're inviting stress into your life.

Wrong decisions can pay off immediately—putting a cookie in your mouth or having that cocktail after work feels satisfying in the moment, but you put off the stress for later. One origin of stress is the outcome not being guaranteed. To mitigate risk, a person might do nothing. The problem is that a person who does not take control is not living; they are merely surviving.

Here are strategies to manage negative emotions:

  1. Have a good grasp of reality. Reality is something you can't change. All you can change is having a positive reaction. Accept reality, then put emotions into perspective.

  1. Get over yourself. People make decisions that have nothing to do with you. If your boss is having a bad day, it may be that they had a bad morning—it may have nothing to do with you.

  1. Will this matter? Ask yourself: will this matter in ten minutes? I use this method when dealing with physical challenges. Most little things don't last very long.

  1. Share selectively. We all need to vent, but we don't need to broadcast. Have a small circle of loved ones you can vent to. Venting to the right people is productive.

  1. Have positive habits. You need three positive experiences to counterbalance one negative. Exercise releases endorphins. Getting sleep recharges the brain. Being around positive people helps.

  1. Anticipate negative situations. Certain situations are going to be uncomfortable. Don't be caught off guard—have a plan and proper expectations to put stress into perspective.

  1.  Many negative emotions can be eliminated. If you have an emergency fund when a big bill arrives, you'll declare "oh well, life happens." Without one, you'll spend untold time figuring out what to do.

Being disciplined means having control over your emotions so you can achieve your goals. Negative emotions can be let go, and positive emotions can be held onto. It takes work, and just like anything, it's a habit. You want control over your destiny. The way to do this is to take control of your negative emotions and put them into perspective.
